Remove bird droppings as soon as possible: wet cool paintwork with water, let the residue soften, then gently rinse it off or lift it away with a very soft, damp towel. Do not scrape off dried droppings. If a dull patch remains after cleaning, it may already be damage rather than leftover dirt.
Why should you remove bird droppings promptly?
The residue can affect the surface and leave permanent marks if left for too long. How quickly this happens depends on factors including temperature, paint condition and the contamination itself. There is no fixed waiting time that is safe in every case.
Paint protection is no reason to delay removal either. It can make maintenance easier, but does not guarantee complete protection against this kind of damage. If the paint is warm, move into the shade first and allow the panel to cool.
Removing fresh bird droppings
- Wet the area: Gently apply water to loosen the residue. Do not start by wiping it with a dry towel.
- Rinse off what you can: Remove loosened residue with minimal contact. Keep the pressure-washer lance at the recommended distance rather than spraying one spot from extremely close range.
- Lift away any remaining softened residue: Lightly place a clean, damp, very soft towel on the area and gently lift the residue away. Do not spread the contamination across a large section of paint.
- Switch towel sides: Do not pass a contaminated section over the paint again. Rinse with clean water if necessary.
- Clean the surrounding area: If road dust is also present, follow with an appropriate wash. Do not rub the dirty surrounding paint dry.
What helps with dried droppings?
Give the water time to work. You can gently lay a clean towel dampened with water over the spot to keep it moist. Do not weigh it down, rub it or allow it to dry out. Then rinse off or gently lift away the loosened residue. If solid residue remains, wet it again rather than scrubbing harder.
For the subsequent hand wash, mix 60 ml of Wash & Snow Foam with 10 litres of water. For a small spot, there is no need to improvise a whole fresh wash solution: soaking with water followed by your normal wash is a straightforward approach. Do not apply concentrated cleaner to the spot unless that use is specifically approved.
What does a dull patch after cleaning mean?
Inspect the clean, dry paint under good lighting. If no residue is visible but the surface remains dull, discoloured or uneven, the paint surface may already have been affected. More shampoo or harder rubbing will not repair it.
On suitable, intact gloss paint, professional polishing may improve superficial marks. How much improvement is possible needs to be assessed. We explain the limits in Understanding scratches and paint damage and Polishing a test spot. Do not polish matte paint to a gloss. Cracks, flaking or deeper damage warrant a professional assessment.
What about ceramic-coated paint?
Remove contamination promptly and gently from fully cured ceramic coatings too. Use suitable maintenance products rather than trying aggressive household remedies. A change in water-beading shape does not reliably tell you whether the coating has been damaged at that spot.
Do not carry out a normal car wash during the first five days after applying Final PRO. Carefully remove isolated heavy contamination with a gentle stream of water or a very soft, damp towel; do not scrub it dry. See Allowing a ceramic coating to cure. For your later maintenance routine, read Caring for a car after ceramic coating.
Frequently asked questions
Can I simply wipe bird droppings off dry?
No. Wet and soften them first. Solid particles can leave marks when wiped dry.
How long should I soak them?
Until the residue loosens without vigorous rubbing. A fixed number of minutes will not suit every amount or degree of drying; keep the spot moist and check it periodically.
Can I use glass cleaner on the paint?
It is not a general recommendation for this purpose. Use water for soaking and a suitable paint-cleaning method rather than a product intended for a different surface.
Does a ceramic coating completely protect against bird droppings?
No. Remove contamination promptly even from protected paint. Cleaning cannot reverse damage that has already occurred.
